Osho – A Sufi story: The philosophers, logicians and doctors of law were drawn up at court to examine Mulla Nasrudin. This was a serious case, because he had admitted going from village to village saying: \u201dThe so-called wise men are ignorant, irresolute and confused.\u201d He was charged with undermining the security of the state.<\/p>\n

\u201dYou may speak first,\u201d said the King.<\/p>\n

\u201dHave paper and pens brought,\u201d said the Mulla.<\/p>\n

Paper and pens were brought.<\/p>\n

\u201dGive some to each of the first seven savants.\u201d<\/p>\n

They were distributed.<\/p>\n

\u201dHave them write separately an answer to this question:<\/p>\n

\u2019What is bread?\u2019<\/p>\n

This was done. The papers were handed to the King, who read them out:<\/p>\n

The first said: \u201dBread is a food.\u201d<\/p>\n

The second: \u201dIt is flour and water.\u201d<\/p>\n

The third: \u201dA gift of God.\u201d<\/p>\n

The fourth: \u201dBaked dough.\u201d<\/p>\n

The fifth: \u201dChangeable, according to how you mean \u2019bread\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sixth: \u201dA nutritious substance.\u201d<\/p>\n

The seventh: \u201dNobody really knows.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201dWhen they decide what bread is,\u201d said Nasruddin, \u201dIt will be possible for them to decide other things.<\/p>\n

For example, whether I am right or wrong. Can you entrust matters of assessment and judgement to people like this? Is it or is it not strange that they cannot agree about something which they eat each day, and yet are unanimous that I am a heretic?\u201d<\/p>\n

Yes, that is the situation of your so-called philosophers, theologians, doctors of law: the learned people. They are parrots. They have not even known themselves yet \u2013 what else can they know? They are not even acquainted with themselves \u2013 how can they be acquainted with others? They have not unravelled the mystery that they are.<\/p>\n
